HOUSE & B & B

Light and space in the Old West of Rotterdam

HOUSE & B & B

A young couple with a child wanted to realize their own home and a Bed & Breakfast in a characteristic DIY house in the Old West of Rotterdam.

In order to give the living spaces in the house as much daylight as possible, we placed the living room on the top floor, with an open connection to the kitchen.

Because the B & B was on the ground floor, the direct connection between their home and the backyard was lost. By removing part of the roof, we created the solution: a south-west facing roof terrace. The residents there now have more sunlight than before in their urban garden. Moreover, they have a spectacular view of the Rotterdam skyline. To strengthen the indoor-outdoor relationship, we let the raised lemon-yellow roof terrace extend inside.

Inside, the design needed a connecting element: the stairs lent themselves perfectly to this. However, due to the difficult shape (two quarters and a stitch), it made a messy impression. We chose to completely clad the sides with birch plywood, which continues into the balustrades. The staircase now forms one plastic whole, a recognizable element on every floor.
