ERASMUS HOUSE

Monumentality at Grotekerkplein

ERASMUS HOUSE

In honor of the 500th anniversary of Lof der Zotheidthe first publication of Desiderius Erasmus, Rotterdam wants to establish an Erasmus House, which will become the new cultural center of the city.

Located between the Grote Kerkplein and a busy shopping street, the building opens up to the square. With its strict geometry and robustness, the building tries to acquire its monumentality. Especially in the facade, where the constructive elements visually connect the stacked functions of the building – bar/restaurant, exhibition spaces and roof terrace.

While the building opens to the Grotekerkplein, it closes off from the shopping street with the accumulation of an auditorium, exhibition space and reflection garden. Only at street level are fronts where the shop and offices are located.
