A young couple with child wanted to have their own house and bed & breakfast in a characteristic house in Oude Westen (Old West area) in Rotterdam.
To provide the living spaces with as much daylight as possible, the living room was placed on the top floor, with a open connection to the kitchen on the floor below.
Since the B & B was placed on the ground floor, a direct connection between a living space and backyard was lost. By deconstructing a part of the existing roof we found the solution: a south-west oriented roof terrace. This roof terrace gains more sunlight than the former town garden. Besides that, it gives excellent views on the Rotterdam skyline. To enhance the indoor-outdoor relationship, the yellow terrace is extended into the interior.
